History/Overview
Once again, Ram is stocking its showrooms with the 1500 Classic, a previous-generation version of the brand’s light-duty, full-size pickup truck to which it added the “Classic” label after a new 1500 debuted in 2019.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
This year, there are four fewer configurations to choose from, but Ram continues to offer the same range of trim levels and cab/bed sizes.
Available Trims
The Ram 1500 Classic comes in Tradesman, SLT, Express, Night Edition, and Warlock trims. The standard engine is a 3.6L V6, a 5.7L V8 is the option. Either way, you get an eight-speed transmission, and rear- or four-wheel drive. Regular cab is the traditional two-door configuration; Quad Cab is the four-door starting point, and Crew Cab gets a larger rear seat. Short and long cargo beds are available.
Standard Features
Tradesman trim gets 17-inch wheels, power-adjustable heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, vinyl flooring, cruise control, six-speaker audio, power locks, a 5.0-inch touchscreen, A/C, trailer wiring, and a tailgate lock.
SLT trim gains alloy wheels, chrome bumpers, floor mats, a power sliding rear window, and a USB charging port.
Express adds 20-inch wheels, fog lights, and tubular side steps.
Night Edition’s additions are black wheels and black trim elements, body-colour rear bumper and front upper fascia, and an 8.4-inch infotainment display.
Warlock gets heavy-duty rear shocks, LED taillights, leather-trimmed steering wheel, fog lights, and rear parking proximity sensors.
Key Options
Ram offers the 1500 Classic with a selection of option packages that bundle items like a heated steering wheel and heated seats in one pack; and auto-dimming/power-folding mirrors, digital gauges, LED cargo lighting, and a garage door remote in another.
You can also add navigation to certain trims, along with a seven-speaker Alpine sound system in high-end models.
A trailer towing group adds larger side mirrors and trailer brake controls.
Fuel economy
The Ram 1500 Classic’s fuel consumption estimates are 13.9/9.6 L/100 km (city/highway) with the 3.6L engine and RWD, and 14.5/10.2 L/100 km with 4WD. V8 models are rated for 15.9/11.1 L/100 km (city/highway) with RWD, and 16.2/11.6 L/100 km with 4WD.
Competition
Being a generation behind the rest of the truck segment means the 1500 Classic can’t compete with the latest Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Instead, consider the Classic an affordable alternative to the segment’s newer competitors -- or even an alternative to a used pickup.
